This is a review of the quality of the Planet of the Apes [Blu-ray. The video looks excellent for a film as ancient as this, but is not even end to handsome. The high def transfer in some cases actually serves to accentuate problems you might not have noticed otherwise. I saw more than a few soft scenes where they looked unfocused. Grain was never too obtrusive, but the colors were uneven through a great share of the film. Some scenes were rich and lustrous, and others washed out. My biggest dilemma is the sound. They indicate the sound here as a DTS 5.1 mix, and a mono mix. I chose DTS and was sorely dissapointed. My subwoofer never kicked on. That means that there was never an instance when there was a frequency lower than about 85hz. This made for a very shallow sounding mix. Adding to that, the surround speakers never seemed to register anything, and you’ve got what sounded to me like a mono mix anyway. All of the sound seemed to arrive from my center channel. To me, digitally remastering a film soundtrack at this level means accentuating the lower registries by adding lower frequencies, and placing atmospheric and musical elements in the surround channels. If you don’t concept on doing that, what’s the exhaust of calling it a DTS 5.1 mix? Anyway, this is by far the best transfer I’ve ever seen of the film, but don’t be looking for anything more than a slightly better than average transfer, and a glorified mono track.
I recently watched this novel version of “The Planet of the Apes” for the first time since seeing it at a drive-in theater help in 1968. First I was amazed at how noteworthy of the film I had forgotten. Actually, most of what I remembered was the (then) gross ending. What I was impressed with this time around was what an sparkling and well-scripted film this was (and mild is) . Like any fine science fiction, this film provides an lively commentary on the human condition. One the one hand you have the Minister of Science and Defender of the Faith debunking and destroying an archeological dig, because it is contrary to the faith of the Apes, but on the other hand in his reading from the sacred scrolls you hear the proper description of the destructive (dare I say “imperfect? “) nature of humans. I’ve been pondering this segment of the film quite a bit over the past few days. Like others, I reflect Charlton Heston is in aesthetic manufacture here. It’s easy to represent him as president of the National Rifle Association after seeing this film. I calm hold Heston in “Ben Hur” and “the Ten Commandments,” but that probably reflects my personal interest in the stories that are told there. As one Academy Award film-maker recently said upon receiving his lifetime achievement Oscar (I assume it was Norman Jewison), “Catch a legend that needs to be told and divulge it.” This version of “The Planet of the Apes” certainly tells a honorable record, and tells it well.

Many people identify this as the greatest rock documentary ever made. I’m not determined it quite deserves that trace (my vote would go for the older T.A.M.I. film, which has not yet been made available on DVD), but it is certainly the most piquant and repulsive. Clearly it started off as a documentary of the Stones 1969 tour of the United States (which I possess was their first U.S. tour following the death of Brian Jones and his being replaced by Mick Taylor), but everything changed once Altamount happened. The death of Meredith Hunter at the hands of a member of the Hell’s Angels, who had been employed to own security at the free concert the Stones gave in San Francisco, takes over the film, changing it from a documentary about the Stones on tour to a slay that took position at a Stones concert.

Until about half plan through the documentary, the film is calm primarily a documentary about the Stones. But once the cameras find to Altamount, the crew (which included as a cameraman young filmmaker George Lucas, though none of Lucas’s film was included in the film due to a camera scrape) catches the increasingly improper atmosphere at the concert, with fans ascending the stage, fighting with the Hell’s Angels, fighting with each other. The Grateful Humdrum, scheduled to play, declined to do so when they heard that Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane had been beaten up onstage by the Angel’s (we examine a brief shot of Jerry Garcia reacting incredulously to the news of the violence) . By the ruin of the film, the viewer is left with a completely sickened feeling of the stupidity of everything he or she has objective seen.
The violence completely obscures the fact that the Stones were at the time precisely what the announcer at the beginning of the film announces: the world’s greatest rock and roll band. The performances, especially the earlier ones in the film, but also in the raw tape of songs like “Brown Sugar,” are stunningly pleasurable, and it is especially apparent the modern astronomical guitar edge that Mick Taylor has brought to the band (Jones brought an across the board brilliance, and could add everything from coast guitar to apt piano to sitar to the mix, but was probably not quite Taylor’s equal as a guitarist, and Taylor also brought a fresh reliability that contrasted with Jones’s increasingly erratic behavior in his last year with the band) . On the other hand, in the film the band largely disappears at time. Apart from Mick Jagger, the Stones are not always a palpable presence in their gain film.

Historicism could be defined with focusing on the meaning of history rather than the unbiased telling of the events of history, or recounting the events for the sake of getting to their supposed underlying meaning. Sometimes it even involves projecting onto events meaning they would not otherwise have. Altamount is easily one of the most historicized moments in the history of both the sixties and rock and roll. Altamount is rarely treated as an isolated tragedy, but is more frequently regarded as a turning point in history, as if it were when the sixties came crashing to an extinguish (something that I feel can more rightfully be ascribed to Kent Space) . I don’t personally understand this need to project some legend of apocalyptic closure to the decade. I’ll merely dwelling that I don’t deem that we should recognize anything more in Altamount than a tragedy that ought otherwise to have been prevented. It should it not be baptized as, nor was it, a defining moment in history.
One frustration I had with the film is that far too often the camera isn’t focused on what was happening. There is a tendency for the film to merely drift at times. For instance, while the Flying Burrito Brothers, there are only a couple of incredibly brief shots of Gram Parsons’s serve. We can hear him singing the song, but we never inspect him actually singing it. Earlier, when performing the immense Robert Johnson song “Fancy in Vain” (featuring some of the most powerfully poetic images ever written by an illiterate individual), the camera completely abandons a real-time observation of the performance, and lapses into a approach fantasy-like viewing of Mick Jagger swirling about the stage in wearisome motion.
Anyone who loves this film, or merely enjoys it, should definitely read the Stanley Booth book THE Honest ADVENTURES OF THE ROLLING STONES, which covers the sincere same events as the film, but in grand greater detail and with more insight both into the events surrounding Altamount and into the members of the band. It is one of the immense classics of rock journalism.
“Gimme Shelter” is a lot of things. It’s one of the greatest rock and roll films ever made. It’s one of the greatest documentaries ever made. It’s one of the best glimpses of a moment in time ever recorded, and it’s a lasting crystallization of the point in time when the ideals and dreams of the 60′s died and the hedonism and self-preservation of the 70′s kicked in.

The Maysles Brothers and Charlotte Zwerin are notorious for making documentaries about bible salesmen, feeble women in decaying mansions, and artists creating art. “Gimme Shelter” is doubly a shock because these somber and almost grim documentarians have been able to save across a rock and roll film that gives you a feeling of the power of music and the freshness of the spirit that the Stones brought to the table. In these moments, captured in 1969, you can notice the point where the Stones develop the step from rock stars to phenomena, and you sight where the wall between artist and audience spawns from.
“Gimme Shelter” follows the Stones from touring and recording to their free concert at Altamont Speedway. The film breaks with documentary tradition and gives us a skewed timeline, interspersing concert footage and recording sessions with newscasts about the aftermath of Altamont, the Stones in the screening room watching footage of Altamont, and scenes of negotiating the final details before Altamont goes down. The Altamont concert itself is a marvel to notice, to sight what was captured by the gang of camera operators wandering through the crowd (including George Lucas) . From drug dealers to painted hippies, Hells Angels to fathers and sons, from whimsy to apprehension. “Gimme Shelter” follows the indicate from it’s chaotic first moments of parking wherever, ingesting whatever and acting however, to scenes of quick and random violence springing up around the stage as well as on stage. If you’ve seen “Gimme Shelter” before, you’ve noticed that the sound and image lack a lot. Criterion has completely restored the visuals to crystal clarity and given the audio tracks a much-needed shot in the arm. This film has never looked so pleasurable and never sounded so superior.
The Stones have been the focus of several movies and a gang of media coverage, attempting to view beyond the gamefaces and notice the sincere Stones. Very few have succeeded. “Gimme Shelter” is filled with moments where the Stones forget to pose, forget to do up a pretense and acknowledge with genuine shock, proper madden and exact regret. This is the anti-”Woodstock.” Besides all that, you’ll rarely witness the Stones in such top execute and sounding and looking so great. These videos are the best of Disney. Watched these when I was a kid and they are 100 times better looking now. Gargantuan job Disney. I have all four volumes.
I have been looking for the Correct Life Adventures on DVD for a long time. I called Disney a few years ago and then said that they at that time had no plans of producing them. So I looked on Ebay for obsolete 16mm sound prints will diminutive findings.
I’m very happy that they are now producing them on DVD they quality of the describe and sound is worthy better that the 16mm prints that I remember in garde school. A job will done and a long time waiting..
